“Family Honor has helped us to become students of our children. The programs that we have been involved in have given us frequent opportunities to connect with our children and consider how our children are fashioning themselves as a gift for God and others.”
-- Karen Provost
Thomas and Karen Provost and their daughter Bernadette were the featured speakers at Family Honor’s 3 rd annual “Fulfilling the Promise” fundraising event which was held in Columbia, SC on Tuesday, May 6.
The breakfast event attracted 100 parents, grandparents and young adults who came to find out more about Family Honor’s work and meet other like-minded individuals who believe in chastity. Attendees also came to make a commitment of time, talent or treasure to Family Honor.
Board Chairman Pat Strimpfel opened the event by welcoming everyone and sharing a small part of her family’s personal journey with Family Honor.
After Pat spoke, Family Honor Executive Director Brenda Cerkez shared the vision for what Family Honor hopes to do in the coming months and years.
Brenda remarked that the organization wants to “First, make sure more families in South Carolina have access to Family Honor programs. In the next year, we need to recruit and train 25 more men and women to be presenters just in our own state, to help us respond to program requests from families to which I have had to say ‘ no’, because we don’t have the manpower to deliver all those requested programs.”
The Provost family followed Brenda, with each sharing a bit about what Family Honor has meant to them. Thomas Provost remarked that “We believe that central to God’s plan for the spread of the gospel is the role of parents. Karen and I are still involved because we believe that purposeful parents are the answer to the challenges adolescents face in society today.”
Their, daughter, Bernadette, added her thoughts as well: “My parents and I are closer, and talk more often. I may have taught those kids about chastity, but by being a member of Family Honor I have learned so much more about life and love and I have hope for my future and the future of those we have taught.”
Thanks to a number of generous donors, Family Honor raised over $5,000 in donations at the event, with an additional commitment for multi-year pledges from some of those attending.
