August will mark the start of another semester for Family Honor's college-credit course, The Principles of Teaching Family-Centered Chastity Education. Once again, the course is offered in a format that is primarily computer-based.
This course has been and will continue to be the first step our organization requires for adult men and women who wish to become part of our team of presenters for our Family Honor parent-child programs. Other interested adults may register for the course as well, as space is available.
The technology-enabled format for Family Honor's teacher training course is proving to be a significant tool in assisting the evangelization of our culture, by preparing men and women from all over the United States – and in the future, other countries as well – to be “apostles of chastity,” able to not only defend traditional Church teaching in the area of sexual morality, but to enthusiastically promote it in a fresh, new way that is truly life-changing for those who hear it.
This course format is helping to spread more quickly a unique Catholic Christian, family-centered philosophy of training, since it allows course content to be accessed at any time and location convenient to the student. It also allows greater access to the professional expertise of our instructors.
The new computer-based format has proven to be particularly ideal for those adults who have other full-time occupations or commitments or parents who have limited time to learn the Family Honor content. By completing 80% of their training at home, students will recognize a cost savings in travel and lodging expenses over frequent travel to onsite training.
At the beginning of each semester, each student who has registered and been accepted into the course will be sent a DVD that covers course content for the first four sessions.
Content on the DVD will be a combination of lessons (known as Learning Modules) presented visually, with voice-over narration by male and female instructors and guest presenters. The lessons will include various graphics, photos, video clips, interactive assignments and hyperlinks that will connect the adult student to web sites where they may read more about a certain topic.
The students will also receive hard-copy books and articles to read, along with a syllabus and deadlines for course projects, journals and tests.
For the 5th session of the course, all students will be required to come to South Carolina for a weekend session that will be held on a Friday evening and during the day on Saturday.
As an overview course that has had 18 years to mature and ripen, the course is rich in content. In addition, each year, a significant amount of time is spent by course instructors to research and update many of the subject areas covered in the course. Topics include:
- Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body
- Chastity and virtue
- Fertility appreciation
- Family systems and healthy family life
- Psychosexual development of children and adolescents
- Research on abstinence education
- Communication skills that support family “connectedness”
- History and trends in sex education
The Principles of Teaching Family-Centered Chastity Education is a 400 level Education Course, with credits given through an arrangement with Newman University in Wichita, Kansas.
Students who complete the course successfully will receive either undergraduate or graduate credit, depending on the preference they indicated when registering and whether they have completed the extra project if they had requested graduate credit.
In order to obtain graduate credit, the student must have an undergraduate degree.
At this point, Family Honor plans to offer the computer based course at least twice every year.
